The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer and General Manager to lead one of the nation’s largest community-owned electric utilities. SMUD serves approximately 1.6 million customers and is widely recognized for its commitment to reliability, affordability, and environmental leadership.
The CEO & General Manager reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the organization. This role will oversee operations, financial performance, and long-term planning, while ensuring alignment with SMUD’s strategic priorities, including its goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Key responsibilities include leading organizational strategy, maintaining strong relationships with the Board and external stakeholders, overseeing major capital and infrastructure initiatives, and ensuring continued operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- At least 15 years of progressive leadership experience, including at least 10 years in executive-level roles
- Experience in utilities, energy, or a closely related sector
- Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex organizations and drive organizational change
- Strong stakeholder engagement experience, including board, regulatory, and community relations
- Commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive leadership
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, with an expected starting salary range of $700,000 to $1,100,000, in addition to a comprehensive benefits package.
